Marlene and I are on our way to the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. There are three Cayman islands, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. As some of you know from our other adventures, we like to take the trail less travelled, tour villages rather than cities, and shop in the grocery store rather than the souvenir shop, so we've chosen the laid-back Cayman Brac, the quiet island.
Cayman Brac is a small island with an interesting history related to its proximity between Cuba, Jamaica and Honduras. These were pirate waters in the 16th century, and folklore has it, pirates not only used the Island to get fresh water and food, but also hid some of their takings there, pirate treasure.
From our research, part of the Island has high bluffs, some of which drop directly into the sea, and others not so much, leaving secluded beaches and numerous caves to be explored.
Much of the Island is protected by reefs leaving the waters ideal for snorkelling.
So, we're pretty excited. We have rented a small self catering unit. Bicycles are included as an option for getting around the Island. We're hoping for more than sun and sand; we're thinking a little adventure would be nice. Our packing list includes not only a bathing suit and sunglasses, but also snorkelling gear, underwater camera, hiking boots, headlamps and backpacks.
From experience, we're expecting the unexpected, and often that leads to the most vivid memories, and of course, the best stories. So, please join us as we leave the snow behind for a couple of weeks, and head south seeking sun, sand and a little adventure.
