We woke just before sunrise, and started our morning ritual with a cup of coffee. We watched the sun rise over the St. Kitts peninsula and took note of the sailboats anchored in the bay.
We decided not to go out on adventure, but just hang out around the apartment.
We planned out the day's meals which resulted in a short shopping list and a walk down to the market for tomatoes, a ripe pineapple and watermelon. Our timing was good because the selection was excellent and we got back before it got too hot.
Marlene and I brought books to read and there’s also a small but interesting collection in the study. It felt good to just sit on the balcony and read for an hour or so with another coffee. When we looked up over the bay from time to time, we saw boats either coming or going that took our interest for the moment before going back into our books.
When Marlene decided it was time to get a little sun, she headed down to the pool just out front and a level below the balcony. In the quiet, I got inspired to write this story. This balcony, with a breeze, shaded by a palm tree, and with a great view of the Caribbean makes for a wonderful office. As most of you know, I loved my days at Scapa during my working life and it’s hard to compare, but memory serves, and it shows a nice contrast between then and now.
About noon plus or minus and hour, Marlene will prepare a summer-time lunch of cheese, crackers, lunch meat rolled into finger sized pieces, and some fresh tomatoes or maybe some cucumber. She has a knack for it.
Around 3 or 4 PM, it’ll be time for a glass of wine with cut-up pieces of fruit. It’s usually about this time we start planning for tomorrow. We’ll probably get out the map, do some research on the internet, and formulate our thoughts.
By 6:30, the sun will set behind us. On the far side of the bay, lights will start to glow from the houses perched on the hillside. It’s a perfect setting for dining alfresco. We’ve been eating fresh fish almost daily and it’s added to our St. Kitts experience.
Shortly after the sun is gone, the moon will rise across the bay. Since we arrived here a week or so ago, every evening the moon has been larger than the night before. Tonight, it’ll be full and glisten on the bay. I think we’ll turn down the lights, and with any luck and some Lionel Richie music, Marlene will dance with me in the moonlight.
