It didn't take long, shortly after leaving Sault Saint Marie,
we got our first glimpses of Lake Superior. And, she presented herself as not
only one of the great lakes, but maybe the Superior one, as the name suggests.
As mentioned in our last story, I've passed by here a few
times before, and as a result, I did a selling job to get Marlene interested in
the adventure. All along, I was going on old memories, hoping they would hold
true for me , and also meet Marlene's expectations. So far, so good.
To get this far, we've driven a 1000 kms, more or less. Jeep
Compass has done well hauling Penny up some long hills along with overcoming
significant headwinds. You might know, we're a little underpowered. Since the
last time I was out this way, the Province has added a number of passing lanes,
often on the long hills. That means, that we can relax when Jeep is struggling
to maintain the speed limit, and let the super duty trucks, with something to
prove, show us their stuff by motoring on by.
Now to change the subject again; as some of you know, I had
my 65th birthday recently. In some respects it was a none event, in others, it
was a milestone, but on this trip, Ontario Parks is giving me a 20% Seniors
discount. So, at least there's one benefit of getting old.
But that brings me to a related subject. As we set up camp today, it
was interesting to see the number of camping trailers about our size or smaller.
Now of course, there are some large and very elaborate ones too, but It probably
speaks to the frugal and practical nature of our generation.
As I ramble on, I'll change the subject one last time. We
got into camp today, just in time for a waterfront campsite. It reminds me of
our Magdalen Island campsite. We can hear the surf pounding the beach just
meters away, and can hardly imagine what this place would be like in a storm; a
storm like the November night in 1975 when the Edmund Fitzgerald, laden with
iron ore, sank just a short distance from here.

But for the moment, the weather is good on Lake Superior; we're
comfortably camped by her side, we've beachcombed her shores for the first time and
dined in view of her sunset.
As we climbed into
bed, the winds were blowing with intensity, the sound of the surf was drowning
out all others, and she was giving us the Lake Superior experience we came
for.
