Bears in the Park

Before I left home, it occurred to me that the last time I was in the park, I had an encounter with a bear. I still remember it well, have told the story many times, but now I hoped that wouldn’t be repeated. Wildlife encounters are always interesting, but a bear in the campsite is too close for comfort.

We met at Mike’s and headed off in 2 vehicles with canoes on the roof and packs bulging. We were wondering if we could carry all that stuff on the portages. According to the map, there were many on our route, and one was 2320 meters, or 2.3 kms. While packing the canoes at Canoe Lake, we had one last chance to slim down and leave some of the niceties in the car.

The weather was good, including only light winds for our paddle up the Lake. The first portage was 295 meters, and we passed the test, but it took 2 carries. Two carries means, 3 times over the trail. That was a minor inconvenience on that short portage, but it was going to be a bigger deal on the long portages.

We canoed through some small scenic lakes and streams, did one more portage, and arrived on Tom Thomson Lake to find our first campsite. After setting up camp, there in the campsite were the 3 bears, Mike, Joe and Steve. Would any real ones show up over night?
