Other Sounds in the Park

In the last posting, I wrote about hearing the wolves howling, but there were other interesting sounds in the Park as well.

I woke one night to the sound of both Mike and Bruce snoring. At times, they were in unison, but more often than not, they were not. I have a feeling when I was in a deep sleep, I contributed as well. But there was another sound, one that took me a minute to recognize; it sounded like a jet flying overhead at 30,000 feet.

Back in civilization, I probably wouldn’t have even noticed a jet flying that high. But that night, it made me wonder why a jet would be flying over this neck of the woods. The previous day, when we had left behind the ranger station and camp grounds at Rock Lake and made our portage to Penn, I felt like we were getting away from civilization. It was a feeling of seclusion. Simple seclusion. Now in the middle of the night, this jet flying overhead took that away. It was interesting how that insignificant sound affected the moment. The next day, I noticed jets flying over a couple of times from different directions. It appears we were on a flight path or two.

Another time when I woke at night, I heard scratching in the leaves behind the tent. The scratching would start and stop, as though the animal was digging here and looking there. We had left the tent door open, possibly to see the stars and get the full outdoor camping experience, or maybe it was just for fresher air than 3 guys sleeping in a closed up tent. In any case, I waited for the animal, probably a raccoon, to come around and take a look inside. Laying there, I would have been meeting him eye to eye in the light of the full moon. As I was contemplating the outcome of that, I dosed off, only to be wakened by the light of dawn a couple of hours later.

The sounds in the Park were all part of the experience.
