The apartment has a wonderful balcony where there is always a breeze. It's set up high with a 180 degree view of Basseterre, the bay and beyond.
From our balcony, to the right and south, we can see the island of Nevis. Straight ahead and to the east, there is the port with sailboats, anchored, bows to the wind. As I pan to the left and westward, there’s the Bay road leading along the waterfront to the town core. Houses are perched on the distant hillsides behind. Immediately below, is our pool with flagstone decking, lounge chairs, umbrellas, and surrounded by beautiful gardens. There’s a canon aimed outward over the bay to protect us from pirates or an invading nation arriving by sea. St. Kitts has a long history of invasions by Spanish, French and British forces. Over my left shoulder to the north, are small treed mountains with farms along their skirt.
The apartment is a warm collection of spaces and decor. In front, there is a large kitchen, dining and sitting area. The bathroom and bedroom are to the back. A neat little study with a library is in between.
Each piece of antique furniture is one of a kind. The artwork is unique, some created by Claudia herself. The eclectic assortment of antiques and artwork, make the apartment feel homey. It’s taken days for me to focus in on each individual piece and finally appreciate them as a collection.
We’ve learned that home is more than a refuge. It’s a place where we can relax with our morning coffee, and prepare mentally for the up coming day. We also need to be able to rest in the evening, reflect on the day’s activities, and plan for tomorrow. It’s the place that not only provides protection from the elements, but that needs to feel like home. Truly, this is that place. Our home is called, Palm Court Gardens.
