Do As the Locals Do

This morning we set out for a little adventure along the northwest coast. It was one of the areas that we had identified during our research that seemed to hold nugget potential. It was described as " where the mountains drop directly into the sea, the road is reduced to a single track carved into the mountainside." Reviews on Trip Advisor describe it as "although dangerous at times this is the most beautiful drive in Maui, and maybe even the world". We have to admit we had to pay attention and go slow as the road is narrow and winding at times, but it didn't live up to the hype. Having said that, we did meet a guy driving a Cadillac Escalade that found it a bit much and was getting escorted by a local on a four-wheeler. En route, we did find a short one hour hike that was nice and missed another that was probably worthwhile.

For scenery, we'd rate the area at a 4 out of 10, nice but not spectacular. It definitely wasn't world class, and we're hoping not the best in Maui. Overall, the area was worth a half day but came up short of our expectations.

On our way back, we passed a few beaches that were filled to capacity with surfers. It was Saturday, and the locals had flocked to them. Actually, we've noted 3 major activities on the Island. Driving, the traffic is heavy by our standards. Shopping is next, and I suspect creates most of the heavy traffic. Thirdly, is surfing. The locals love to surf.

We know while travelling, we can't go wrong following the lead of the locals. Eat where the locals eat, shop where the locals shop, and try to speak their language. Maybe it's time to check out some surfing lessons.
