Trekking the Mossman Gorge

In the Daintree Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, there's the Mossman Gorge. It sounded like the perfect place to try out our Australian Survival Strategy. Some might remember, it included carrying a big stick. So here we are.

As it turned out, it was quite heavy and awkward. With the high humidity and carrying the stick, I was sweating in no time. Marlene refused to carry it, and well, I too was embarrassed when we met other hikers.

As is probably always the case in a rainforest, it was threatening rain when we started out. We had forgotten our rain jackets, but being ill prepared didn't stop us. Obviously, they should have been another item on our Survival list.

The track, as they call it here, was well maintained, though our hiking boots were welcome.

The trees were enormous, there were mosses, vines, and  various fungi. There were a few interesting birds, and we heard more than we saw. I expect we overlooked the other wildlife due to them being nicely camouflaged, or maybe it was the big stick.

As was expected with a gorge being in a rainforest, there were two fast flowing creeks and a river, all adding to the diversity and photo opportunities.

As it turned out, it was an easy trek, and near the end, there was a great place for a swim. It was posted as being too dangerous due to the possibility of flash floods, but with that in mind, we swam anyway. The water was cold, the current swift in places, and oh, it was so refreshing. It was the perfect ending to a trek in the Mossman Gorge.
