We're always interested to drink the local wines, eat the
local vegetables and try the local fruits. Sometimes, that means just hopping the ditch, and pulling a tomato from the vine or pear from the tree.
They produce lots of wine in southern regions of Australia.
There's various types, but the one they're famous for, and that we've enjoyed the
most, is Shiraz. It's very reasonably priced, and we purchase it in their
Bottle stores. That's the name for their combined beer, wine and liquor store.
The other treat we've had in the last few days, is the custard
apple. We bought 3 in a bag for $2 at a self serve fruit stand just down the road.
They're green and bumpy on the outside, and a little melon like inside. When
ripe, they're soft to the touch. To eat it, we just cut it in half,
and used a spoon to scoop out the pulp. It's creamy white, soft, and slightly sweet
with a delicate taste. When Marlene's not looking, I spit out the large brown seeds.
I wonder what else we can try while we're here.
