Slowing Down in Old Quebec

On the first day, we drove the main highways to and around Montreal and down the south side of the Saint Lawrence River. Penny kept up just fine. We camped over in the small town of Montmagny. It was all very French, and a good opportunity for us to practice up for the Magdalens.

When leaving Montmagny, we stayed on the secondary highway 132 that follows the River. There was a small Quebec village about every 10 kms. Each had a reduced speed limit and its own charm, so even though progress was slow, the scenery and feel of each town was well worth the time.

Antique shops, wood carvers and other artisans were all along the way. The River was spotted with white caps, and shrouded with low cloud. It's just what we needed to slow us down to holiday speed. When we got to Riviere du Loup, we changed back onto the main highways and clocked the day's mileage requirement before stopping near Fredricton, New Brunswick.

The long hills through Northern New Brunswick challenged the Jeep a number of times and as a result drastically affected the gas mileage.

Our treat of the day, was definitely slowing down along the St. Lawrence and getting the real feel of Old Quebec.
