Hunkered Down, Listening and Waiting

The forecast was for rain, lots of rain in fact, and wind. Strong winds of 50 KPH and gusts to 75. Just up the coast, there were wind warnings for 125 KPH. Fortunately for us, tonight we're in the comforts of the Friendly Fisherman.

Late this afternoon, we made it back from our tour of the Northern Peninsula. We were tired of travelling, tired of camping, and Rose Blanche, the Friendly Fisherman specifically, our home away from  home was a welcome sight.

The skies were threatening as we drove into town. By the time we were unpacking our last few things from Penny, it had started to rain.

A fishing boat came into the harbour. The fisherman unloaded and headed home. We're sure it wasn't just a coincidence. No doubt, they knew what was coming our way, and  knew it was time to take shelter.

Since, the storm has set in. The rain is coming down hard now, the wind is blowing waves of rain across the harbour, and we have a front row seat in the lower balcony.

We can hear the wind. With each gust, the air vent shutters rattle a little, and the rain pelts on the windows and roof.

Earlier, when we looked around the harbour, there were a few lights on, but no one was moving. Everyone was hunkered down as we were. We thought about the prospects of a power failure, so set out the candles, matches and an emergency flashlight. No, two emergency flashlights, just in case.

Then later, through the rain, we couldn't see the lighthouse anymore, only the light when it swept our way. Because it was so faint, it appeared a long way off. That in itself seemed reassuring because the lighthouse overlooks what we knew was an angry sea. Every faint sweep was a reminder that we're set back in the relative safety of the harbour.

Now we're just waiting in the dark for the storm to pass. Warm and dry, and feeling safe in the Friendly Fisherman. Hunkered down, listening and waiting.
