Our home away from home on this trip is the Orca View
Cottage. The early indication is that Marlene used her magic again to find this
gem on the internet.
The cottage is
located 45 minutes northwest of Victoria on Vancouver Island. Highway 14 leads
out of Victoria to the towns of Sooke, Jordan River and Port Renfrew. The
cottage is between Sooke and Jordan River on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. When
we look across the Strait, we can see the USA, and more specifically, mountains
on Washington state's coastline.
The cottage is a cozy modern one bedroom place nestled into the hillside. While
sitting in the living room, we're about 25m or 75 feet from the stony beach and water's edge.
The property is well treed with large fir trees. At least
they're large by our standards, 2 feet in diameter and 100 feet high. They
provide significant privacy giving us the impression we're far more isolated
than we are.
The interior of the cottage is tastefully decorated with a
nautical theme; model sailboats, lighthouses, polished beach stones and more.
Looking out over the Strait, they say we should see various
marine life including sea otters, seals and Orca Whales true to the cottage
name, Orca View. We're going to be keeping our eyes on the sea. The Orca is
also called the Killer Whale, but of course, the Orca name is more tourist
friendly.
