Featherstone House, a Paradise in Paradise

We've been staying at Featherstone House during our time here on Cayman Brac. It's owned and operated by Minnie Branch from North Carolina, though she stays here for a good portion of the year. She's a dear soul and we've enjoyed our friendly chats with her.

On the property, she has a large two storey house with the apartment we rented at ground level, and her part of the house on the second floor. In addition, there's a separate cottage around back. Down front, the sea rolls in day and night. If we leave the windows open, we can hear the sound of the waves.

The sand beach is artfully landscaped around a couple of mature palm trees and three palapas with hammocks for afternoon siestas. There are lots of comfortable chairs and sun-beds for lounging as well. Marlene has her name on one chair in particular for watching the sun set each evening, and the sunsets are spectacular as the sun drops into the sea.

She then has a favorite sun-bed which she positions just perfectly in the sand for  tanning in the afternoon. So that just leaves our mid-morning coffee, and for that we've chosen the covered veranda that spans the full width of the house.

There are more conch shells on the beach here than we've seen anywhere else on our travels. When in season, fifteen minutes of snorkelling will produce half a dozen dandy conch for dinner.

Stories have it that parrots from the reserve often visit the almond trees in the backyard. But so far, we've only heard and have yet to see a parrot. Apparently, they are somewhat shy, nicely camouflaged being green in the green foliage, and will hide out until we're gone. And of course, it's one thing to see one, and another to get a picture.

Featherstone is located midway on the Island, a couple of blocks off the main road that runs the length of the north shore, and at the very end of Beach Drive. There's no traffic and seldom a sound other than the wind and the sea. Even the closest neighbour is not within sight.

You know, Cayman Brac is a Caribbean paradise island for diving, snorkelling, rock climbing, caving, fishing and more. Featherstone House, as we've experienced, is one of the most peaceful places we've ever been, and is best described as a paradise in paradise.
