On Maui, if there's not a cliff where the land meets the sea, then
there's a beach. Rocky beaches, sandy beaches, short beaches or long beaches. In
all, the beaches are plentiful and spectacular. The challenge is finding which
beach is best for us. We like to swim, snorkel and beach comb mostly. But, there's also
beaches for sunbathing, traditional surfing, paddleboard surfing, wind surfing,
kite sailing, parasailing and more. There's multiple specialized beaches for every activity
here in Maui.
We've been to a number of beaches in the past week, often
after hiking. Our biggest challenge has been the size of the surf. Snorkelling
over a coral reef with significant surf is dangerous. We did some research on
the internet and found the surf cycle is between 12 and 16 waves. So we've
learned we can't judge the surf at a glance, we need to watch for a while and
assess the conditions.
The beach and the conditions were perfect on this morning's
adventure. The beach was a mile or so long with gently sloping sand. There
was an interesting coral reef immediately off shore with a variety of colourful
fish. The weather was mainly sunny with light winds, and the surf was mild. I
snorkelled, we combed the beach, and I snorkelled again. Today, Marlene forgot
her earplugs for snorkelling, so I guess we'll head out again in the morning.
The question is, with beaches, beaches everywhere, which one is tomorrow's beach?
