Down Under

Snorkelling in Maui is similar to that we've done elsewhere. It takes a number of variables to come together, a coral reef, colourful fish, maybe a turtle or two, sunshine, easy surf, and a working camera.

The last time I used our underwater camera in the ocean, the main seal leaked. It got salt water into where the memory card and battery plug in. It stopped working shortly afterward, and I thought it was a goner. But with some persistence and good luck, cleaning the terminals brought it came back to life.

I contacted Olympus to see if they would warrantee the seal, but they chose to ignore my request. We considered not using the camera for underwater, but when we got down under here in Maui, we decide we needed to try something.

When travelling, we always bring tape along.  We never know what it'll come in handy for, but experience has shown, it gives us the chance to repair this or make that. Today of course, it was our best bet to seal the camera. After 10 minutes of careful taping, it was do or die for the Stylus Tough.

As you can see, we had some success. In fact, there were traces of water under the tape, but not in the memory card and battery compartment.

I guess we used up today's luck sealing the camera, because there was a turtle in the area, but we didn't get to see it. They can be camera shy, especially with a few snorkelers in pursuit to get a better look.  We can always hope for a next time though, when we're down under.
