The weather window was short but we got out beachcombing
again; this time to Botanical Beach at Port Renfrew. The area was a little more
isolated than some of the beaches we've been to, but it was late on a sunny Sunday
morning, so we weren't alone.
A short hike brought us to some tide pools, and the tide was
just coming in to refresh them. Tide pools catch and hold all kinds of things
often small fish, sea urchins and other treasures from the sea.
From there we hit the beaches. The sand was course but
easier footing than the stony beaches further down the coast. Once again there
was lots of driftwood. Almost an infinite amount, every size and shape from
something we could hold in our palm to enormous logs and tree stumps.
Even though we came back empty handed, we did find treasure. The treasure of beachcombing another of Vancouver Island's beautiful and
interesting west coast beaches. It was the experience of spending a few hours
wandering, hearing the sound of the surf breaking meters
away, letting our thoughts drift on the wind and the waves, without a care in the
world.
Now that we've found the real treasure of beachcombing here,
I expect we'll be heading out again to find even more.
