We were on the 8:50AM ferry to Vesuvius on Salt Spring
Island. The crossing took about 30 minutes. We left our vehicle back at the departure
dock in Crofton, and the plan was for John and Nicki to pick us up on their side.
Walking off the ferry, there they were with their dog Cam. They had
open arms and large smiles as I'm sure we did. The ferry had been just like a
time machine taking us back 20 years to 1998 when we had last seen each other.
They had dropped into our place with their teenaged kids for an impromptu visit
and stayed for just a couple of hours.
The ferry not only
took our memories back to that time, but also another 20 years to 1978 when I
was last in BC. At that time, John and Nicki, lived in the Okanogan Valley. The
time machine didn't even stop there, it took us back another 10 years to 1968 when
we were teenagers. Our families had cottages on Otty Lake, back in Ontario. John
lived 2 doors over, and Nicki a little further down the lake.
For this visit, John and Nicki had set a full agenda,
including a tour of the sights and some hiking on the trails of beautiful Salt
Spring Island.
As we toured and hiked, there was lots of chatter. We had a
lot of catching up to do on all things important, and if not important, at least
interesting that one couple or the other had done on our chosen road.
Nicki capped off the day with a fantastic meal of fresh
halibut, roasted veggies, and wild rice. The accent was the dessert of steaming
apple crisp topped with ice cream.
It seems crazy, but the ferry to the Island was like the
gate keeper of memories. It felt like it was a time machine taking us back 50
years.
